Custom Flooring Project - Vermont

In may of 2011 I was given the opportunity to work on a restored 19th century farm house in Peru, VT.

The flooring was the primary part of this job for my company. What made it unique is that the planking was 8-12 inch wide structural flooring made of hemlock 11/2 inches thick. The top surface needed to be sanded as level as possible and varnished so the wear from traffic would be minimal.

The underside of the floor was exposed as well as the support beams which created the ceiling for rooms below. This needed to be treated with 3 coats of tung oil. No stain was used and the overall color was a light tannish brown with slightly darker grain patterns.

The main family room was layed with planks milled from more of the center of the tree which gave it colored streaks of marroon, green and black as well as the brown tones giving this area a very stricking almost 3D effect. Hemlock is very soft so 3 coats of semigloss varnish was used for the top surface.

All in all, this was a great project to have been a part of.
